Early Season Overview

So far the season has been good.  Nothing explosive yet, but the early spring is cold and slow, with generally dry conditions and low water from a lack of snowpack.
Worked as a stream judge for Cozad's 1 Fly, which may have been the best conditions of the season - cold and blustery and just after a rain, so pretty good BWO hatches were seen and those that fished well and found clear water did very well.
I got into some nice Olive action and fished wets with success alone, with Michael, and with a novel fly over the past week to 10 days.

Have poked into Statz Creek lately and found things to definitely be on the uptick.
Overall the low and clear conditions define the early season, along with the prolonged coolness.

The personal marker of the season has been the effort to fish lower in the local watersheds.  This has  largely been an unpleasant business with heavier lines, rods and flies, but I am making progress, learning to swing, hybrid-swing, and move more, as well as cast heavy rigs in tight confines. Home Stretch is producing nice fish at about 1 per hour, and I feel pleased with progress made there, first and foremost motivating to go.  Great spot for the last 2 hours of the day...and maybe beyond.
